Tradition at the Dojo
Seiza is done at certain major events that occur at the dojo . this is done to maintain the budo atmosphere . Most times the bowing is done standing up. There are students from every religion that practice at the dojo therefore we abstain from the Japanese formal ceremony so that no one is offended .
Dojo Etiquette is enforced 100% so that children are taught from young to respect senior members whether it be age or rank. There are dojo's in South Africa that practice or rather implement Eastern Religions into the style, hoping this will make them more Japanese or give them extra whatever .However the onus is on the student whether they want to get involved in that aspect of karate or not. We are a Western Christian Karate dojo upholding only the etiquette of karate and preserving what was handed to us so that the next generation may benefit .
Also see information regarding dojo Etiquette , and Dojo rules and regulations.
As karate is fast becoming a Olympic sport , the latest trend is towards tournaments and International travel . The dojo is not militaristic , but there is a understanding amongst the students to do what is right, with regard to ethics. We uphold the use of Japanese terminology , which is also available on this web site , should a student wish to print it out.
Appearance and Character Building
It is important to build on the student's appearance .It is important to hear comments from outsiders like " I would like to do karate like that student " or " They are in a different league " Can you imagine watching a play or a ballet with the participants having a very poor acting ability. While it is also very important to be able to be a all round fighter image is very important.
