1. How old must you be to start karate ? Children -- Seiwa Kai like to start the children at 5 and a half . The first year is spent training the child with co-ordination exercises and very basic karate movements , until the child is able to comprehend the more difficult techniques. ADULTS - You are never told to start karate. The decision is yours.

3. What are the colour belts in karate ? White , Yellow , Orange , Green , Blue , Purple , Brown , Black . Seiwa Kai Western Cape have incorporated a cadet rank in between each belt up to blue belt.
4. Gradings / Exams - how many times a year ? From Beginner to Brown belt , gradings are conducted twice a year , in front of several instructors. not all students are eligible to grade . Students must fulfill the grading requirements to be excepted
5. What does it cost to do karate ? Seiwa Kai WC charge a school term fee (3 months) of R500. students can also pay monthly. Affiliation per student is R150 per person.
6. How long does it take to become a black Belt ? Students training twice a week , will be ready for Black belt within 5 years. Students that train 4 times a week can do it in 3 years.
7. Is black Belt in karate the end.? No ! definitely NOT - Some students either from there own futile thinking or interference from parents stop after the 1st black belt . This is equal to going to grade 12 at school and not doing the final exam - what a waste of time . The student has achieved nothing . Shodan 1st Dan is the start and continues up to 10th Dan. Children can obtain a junior Black Belt at 12 years but have to redo the grade again at 16 as a senior. Time period between black belts are 1st to 2nd dan (2 years) 2nd to 3rd Dan - 3 years and so on
8. What do you call a karate instructor ? The Japanese term for a instructor is a " Sensei " There are various levels of instructors , according to there years in karate . The most common being the term sensei. After sensei comes the title Shihan , Renshi Shihan , Kyoshi , Hanshi .
9. How much does it cost to do karate ? Karate fees can be paid monthly or termly(3months) . New students will get 3 free classes prior to officially joining to see whether they want to do karate or not. Affiliation is R150 per person per year. one person doing karate cost R500 per term. two in a family R850 and three in a family R1000.
10. Must I take part in sport karate events? No !! this is not compulsory , but it is s good guage to see how good you are and also promotes good sportsmanship.
